Improving your CGPA isn’t just about studying harder; it is about studying smarter. The credit system works on mathematics, not just hard work. Here are 10 proven ways to maximise your score:

1. Target High-Credit Subjects First In every semester, some subjects carry 4 credits while others carry only 2 or 1. If you score an ‘O’ or ‘A+’ grade in a 4-credit subject, it boosts your CGPA significantly more than scoring well in a lab or elective. Prioritise your study time based on the credit weightage of the subject.
2. Don’t Ignore Internal Assessments. Many students make the mistake of focusing only on the final semester exams. However, internal marks (sessionals/mid-terms) are the easiest marks to score because the syllabus is smaller. Securing full marks in internals acts as a safety net, keeping your grade high even if the final paper is tough.
3. Master the Art of Answer Presentation. In Indian universities, how you write is often as important as what you write. Examiners have to correct hundreds of papers. Make their job easy: use bullet points, highlight keywords, and draw diagrams wherever possible. A well-presented paper often fetches 5–10% more marks than a poorly presented one with the same content.
4. Solve Previous Years’ Question Papers. This is the “golden rule” of college exams. Most universities repeat questions or follow a specific pattern. 7. Avoid “Backlogs” at All Costs. A backlog (failing a subject) is the biggest enemy of a good CGPA. Even if you clear it later, the re-exam often has stricter checking, and it adds extra pressure during your next semester. Aim for the minimum passing marks in your weakest subjects first before trying to top the others.
8. Leverage the Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule). Usually, 80% of the questions come from 20% of the syllabus. Identify the core units or chapters that carry the maximum weightage. 9. Maintain Good Rapport with Faculty. While it sounds old-fashioned, class participation matters. Professors often have some discretion in awarding internal marks or grading borderline cases. A student who is regular and attentive is more likely to get the benefit of the doubt than an absentee.
10. Analyse Your Weak Spots Early. Don’t wait for the study holidays to realise you don’t understand a subject. If you are weak in a numerical subject, start practicing it from the first month.
